How To Spend A Weekend In Wilmington, NC (During the Holiday Season)

*Our stay was hosted by Wilmington tourism*

An enchanted night and Ceviche flights. Santa’s sleigh and fun-filled days. Our Wilmington, NC getaway offered us a much-needed spark to rekindle Christmas spirit. And although we were in town during the holiday season, most of the places we visited are open year-round. Let me show you how we spent our weekend there.

HOTEL - Embassy Suites by Hilton Wilmington Riverfront

What we loved about it: a grand lobby, exceptional customer service, clean and spacious, free made-to-order breakfast, adequate fitness room, parking deck access from inside of the hotel, an indoor pool, stunning river views, beautiful holiday décor

Mark, who is an early riser, ventured downstairs each morning to enjoy a cup of coffee while reading or taking a stroll along the boardwalk. He purchased drinks for Alora, Vivia, and me on his way back to our suite. Sitting and sipping slowly, admiring the view from our window, became my morning ritual.

FATHER CHRISTMAS STUDIO

The only year-round Christmas shop in the city. With event and dinner reservations looming, we planned for a quick walkthrough and a small purchase. Instead, we met the kind husband (James Woody) of the original owner (Deborah Woody). He shared with us the heart tugging story of his wife’s recent passing, the history of the business, and the family’s hopes surrounding their new location and overall direction. Taking photos just didn’t feel appropriate, but I encourage you to visit the Facebook business page and stop by if you can.

My daughters found the cutest sheep ornaments that later accompanied us to our event. And a local family member became a patron the day after we told her about our experience. Supporting felt good to us all.

ENCHANTED AIRLIE

If you appreciate the magical feeling of Christmas, this event at Airlie Gardens is the kind of place you’re supposed to visit. Bright, colorful displays, holiday music, and treats — it’s all there to turn your self-guided walking tour into an annual family tradition. And you can have that if you purchase tickets early (they sell out fast). Remember to dress warmly!

CAMERON ART MUSEUM

We attended the Minnie Evans Birthday Celebration event. There were stations for dream journal creating, bilateral drawing, and card/ornament making. The activities included elements found in Minnie’s artwork. One of her grandsons and a great granddaughter also made a surprise appearance.

Afterwards, we explored the museum and enjoyed brunch at their on site, CAM café. The food was delicious. All of our dining experiences are listed down below.

Cameron Art Museum has classes and events throughout the year. The 2026 calendar is already full of activity. Spend an afternoon or evening there and dine in the process.

BELLAMY MANSION

Between 1859 and 1861, the 10,000 sq. ft., 22-room home was built for Dr. John D. Bellamy and his family by free and enslaved craftsmen. Behind the mansion, out of street view, is the home where some of those enslaved people lived. They would use the backside stairs to enter the Bellamy home and be of service to Dr. John’s family. All of this is open to museum goers.

In full transparency, we visited the slave quarters first. Reading the history of the grounds (and homes) was heavy. As it should be. And although the Bellamy mansion itself was beautifully decorated for the holidays, our ability to admire it was lessened by the reality of those forced to build and serve in it. However, I do recommend you use your own discretion as far as visiting. And if you enjoy touring historic homes, this is one you probably shouldn't miss.

RIVERWALK DRONE SHOW

For 15 to 20 minutes, the night sky became a canvas for 150 drones. Santa Claus, a gingerbread man, etc., formed bright displays for spectators to enjoy. A local business owner recommended we grab a bench early to ensure a close-up look. We left the drone show a little ahead of the crowd to walk to our dinner reservation. On the way, we noticed that getting farther away from the river (heading into the city) offered much more visibility. Keep that in mind.
