Finding Roadside Attractions in High Point, North Carolina

When was the last time you headed somewhere new? It doesn’t have to be a far off place. It can be as convenient as 15 or 30 minutes away.

That’s what my crew did last week. We took a spontaneous Sunday drive to see a roadside attraction. Then we checked out some colorful street murals. Both are in High Point, NC.

I remember a time when spur of the moment family outings made me cringe. I always felt the need to plan so we’d look the part, blah, blah, blah. Nowadays, not so much. I just go.

I’m also grateful to visit places that don’t require much interaction with others as we survive this pandemic. It pays to be resourceful & do your research ahead of time. I keep a notebook of adventurous ideas with pertinent details about each.

High Point is located in the Piedmont Triad of central North Carolina. It is near Winston Salem & Greensboro. People often refer to it as the “furniture capital of the world.” Very fitting because we went in search of a very large dresser & we found it.

The World’s Largest Chest of Drawers is one of High Point’s most popular roadside attractions. In 1926, it was referred to as the Bureau of Information. It stands around 36 feet tall & has two socks hanging from a drawer. My daughters thought that was funny & very realistic in relation to their own!

Forewarned….this attraction is on a busy street & there isn’t a lot of parking. The best photo capture for a family is to have someone standing on the other side of the street if possible. That will ensure both the dresser & family are visible in their entirety. Otherwise, do what you can. We couldn’t get the greatest shot but here we are.

Next, we headed to the Pit Murals. It was just a few minutes from the attraction mentioned above. This area was once a public parking deck. After being demolished, the abandoned space or “pit” attracted muralists from all over. You’ll find them updated often as artists come to showcase their skills. Bottom line… you never know what you’ll get.

When we return to High Point, I’d love to go back & see what’s new. If you plan to visit, I advise going during the day if possible. I imagine it can be a bit sketchy at night.

The pit murals are located in the downtown area by the train/bus stations. If you’d like to view both attractions through our eyes, head to the vlog below.
